What is Zirconium Veneer?

Zirconium veneer is one of the aesthetic dental treatments that most closely resembles natural teeth as it is translucent, heat resistant and strong enough to withstand use in the mouth. Zirconium is the aesthetically preferred material for crown coatings because it resists oxidation and corrosion and does not break in the mouth. It is made up of approximately 90% zirconium oxide, which forms the strongest and most durable coating on the market.

When are zirconium veneers used?

Since it has no allergic properties, its field of application is broad. As it is tissue-compatible, it does not harm the body.

  • Changing the appearance of the anterior teeth for aesthetic purposes

  • Colour change

  • Straightening of crooked teeth

  • To make the spaced teeth (diastema) look united

  • When there is a large amount of decay that makes it difficult for the filling to adhere

  • For the construction of broken, traumatised teeth,

  • It is preferably used for tooth deficiencies.

What are the execution phases of the zirconium veneer?

  • The size, shape and colour of the teeth are determined according to the patient’s wishes.

  • The patient is locally anaesthetised so that painin is not felt.

  • The teeth are reduced by the doctor in an appropriate and careful manner.

  • Careful measurements are taken.

  • After 3-4 hours, the temporary teeth are placed.

  • The trial is completed after 3-4 days on average. Technical situations that need to be corrected are evaluated, the stability of the veneers is checked and a decision is made together with the patient about the appearance.

  • After 1-2 days, the patient’s permanent teeth are placed.

  • At the end of the procedure, a bite splint is placed on each patient to reduce the risk of fracture.

What are the advantages of zirconium veneers?

It is more compatible with the gums as it does not contain metal compared to metal-supported porcelain veneers. Therefore, the possibility of gingivitis is low and it does not cause odour in the mouth. Thanks to its translucency, the appearance of natural teeth is fully reproduced. They can be safely used in patients who are allergic to metal.

What are the disadvantages of zirconium veneers?

In the case of long tooth deficits, there is a risk of fractures because the distance is very large. In such cases, metal-supported porcelain veneers may be preferred, or the distance can be shortened by implant treatment and a zirconium veneer. The price is higher than for metal-supported porcelain veneers.

What is the lifespan of zirconium veneers?

The average lifespan of zirconium veneers is 10 years. With very good care and treatment, this period can be extended up to 15-20 years.
